- 1906: George Roderer Opens His Doors. A German immigrant and trained shoemaker turns his craft into a Dayton business, selling his first pairs from the family home on Xenia Avenue.
- 1910s: A Neighborhood Institution. Word spreads that George knows feet better than anyone in Dayton. The young business rides out the Great Dayton Flood of 1913.
- 1930s: Keeping Dayton on Its Feet. Mass-produced shoes flood the market in the twenties. Through the Depression that follows, Roderer doubles down on expertise, quality and care.
- 1940s: The War Years. Leather rationing tests the store, and the next generation starts learning the craft.
- 1950s: Postwar Prosperity & Kettering. Dayton booms. Families move to the suburbs, and Roderer follows.
- 1970s: The Running Revolution. America discovers jogging, and Roderer discovers athletic footwear fitting.
- 1990s: Pedorthic Expertise. Roderer becomes the region's go-to store for adaptive and therapeutic footwear.
- 2010s: Chris & Emily Carry It Forward. The fifth generation takes the lead with the same values and new energy, and a full online store brings Roderer's expertise to eCommerce.
- 2022: A Fresh Look on Stroop Road. The Stroop Road store is remodeled. Same family and the same sit-and-fit service, in a new space.
- 2026: 120 Years & Counting. A century and then some of putting the right shoe on the right foot. Here's to the next 120 years!
A century of family, craft and community.
Our story begins with George Roderer Sr., who immigrated from Germany and turned his shoemaking skills into a thriving Dayton business. Over five generations, the Roderer family has kept that passion for shoes alive, combining craftsmanship with the personal touch that keeps customers coming back.

When was Roderer Shoe Center founded?
Roderer Shoe Center was founded in 1906 by George Roderer Sr., a German immigrant and trained shoemaker who started selling shoes from the family home on Xenia Avenue in Dayton, Ohio. 2026 marks 120 years in business.
Is Roderer Shoe Center still family-owned?
Yes. Roderer has been owned and run by the Roderer family for five generations. Today the store is led by fifth-generation owners Chris and Emily Roderer.

No. Roderer Shoe Center and Roderer Shoes are separate businesses. Both are run by members of the Roderer family, but they are owned and operated independently. Roderer Shoe Center is located only at 316 E. Stroop Rd. in Kettering, and our website is roderershoecenter.com.
