When your foot rolls out, cushion and flexibility are your best friends.
Supination — also called underpronation — is the opposite of overpronation. Instead of collapsing inward, your foot rolls outward during your stride, concentrating impact on the outer edge of your foot and heel. It's less common than overpronation but just as hard on your body over time. Customers with supination often deal with IT band issues, ankle sprains, stress fractures, and chronic pain along the outside of the foot and knee.
The fix is different than you might expect. Unlike overpronation, supination doesn't call for a rigid stability shoe — in fact, a motion control shoe can make things worse by fighting your foot's natural movement. What supinators need is a neutral shoe with generous cushioning to absorb the uneven impact, a flexible midsole that allows natural foot motion, and a curved last that works with the foot rather than against it.
At Roderer, our fit specialists understand the difference — and it matters. We've seen plenty of customers who were sold the wrong shoe for supination because the person helping them didn't know what they were looking at. We carry neutral cushioned styles from Brooks, HOKA, New Balance, and others in standard and wide widths, and can assess your gait in store to confirm what your foot is actually doing before recommending anything.
High arches are a common companion to supination. If you've been told you have a high arch, or if your shoes consistently wear down on the outer edge, this is your page.
