Spring Cleaning for Your Shoe Closet. What to Keep, What to Replace

Spring shoe closet organization — what to keep and replace

Phew... we made it through winter. If you're like us, we're already prepping for the next season and that means it's time for a little spring cleaning. Not just your closet, but your shoe closet too!

Spring is the season of fresh starts and that includes your shoe closet. While you're swapping out heavy coats and wool sweaters, your footwear deserves the same attention. The shoes that carried you through winter may not be ready for what spring has in store.

Here's how to do a simple shoe closet audit and figure out what's worth keeping, what needs replacing, and what your feet actually need for the season ahead.

Start With a Full Inventory

Pull everything out. Yes... everything. Lay it all out and take an honest look at what you have. You might be surprised by what's been hiding in the back of your closet or how worn down some of your most-used pairs actually are!

Signs It's Time to Replace a Shoe

Not sure if a shoe has more life left? Here's what to look for:

Worn down soles

Flip your shoes over. If the tread is significantly worn especially on the heel or outer edge you've lost the traction and support that shoe was designed to provide. This is especially important for your walking and athletic shoes.

Compressed cushioning

Press your thumb into the insole. If it feels hard and doesn't bounce back, the cushioning is gone. A flat insole means your foot is absorbing impact that it shouldn't have to which can lead to heel pain, knee discomfort, and fatigue over time.

Stretched or misshapen uppers

If the sides of the shoe have stretched out or the heel counter has collapsed, the shoe is no longer holding your foot where it needs to be. No amount of tightening the laces will fix a shoe that has lost its structure.

Pain you didn't used to have

This is the big one. If you've started noticing foot pain, heel soreness, or knee discomfort on walks or after a long day your shoes may be the culprit. Footwear breaks down gradually, so it's easy to miss until the damage is done.

General rule of thumb:

Most walking and athletic shoes have a lifespan of 300 to 500 miles, or roughly 6 to 12 months of regular use. If you can't remember when you bought them, it's probably time to stop by our store!

What's Worth Keeping

Not everything needs to go! A shoe is worth keeping if:

  • The sole still has good tread and grip
  • The cushioning still feels responsive
  • The upper is structurally intact and holds your foot securely
  • It still fits well. Your feet can change size and shape over time, especially with age or weight changes. We can measure your foot in store if you're unsure!

A good cleaning and fresh insoles can often extend the life of a shoe that's structurally sound but just looking a little tired. This is the perfect cost effective option.

What Spring Actually Calls For

Once you know what needs replacing, think about what your spring actually looks like. Are you walking more? Getting back outside after a long winter? Chasing kids around the yard? Traveling?

Spring footwear should be lightweight, breathable, and supportive enough to handle more activity than winter typically demands. A few categories worth considering:

  • Sandals:for casual warm-weather days look for contoured footbeds and adjustable straps for a secure fit
  • Lightweight sneakers:for walking, errands, and active days prioritize cushioning and a flexible sole
  • Water-friendly styles: for rainy days and outdoor adventures where you might encounter wet terrain

The best spring shoe isn't necessarily the trendiest one. It's the one that fits your foot well and supports how you actually live. Trust us, you'll feel better if you prioritize this!
